While there are many distinctions between what is truly “organic” and what is simply deceiving marketing, be sure to check your wine label for the following key phrases:

The LIVE, or “Low Input Viticulture and Enology”, label currently certifies vineyards in Oregon and Washington that utilize natural resources like native insects and pest-deterring plants to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides.

“Salmon Safe,” another certification applied to vineyards in the Northwest, ensures that farmers use agricultural practices, such as planting trees, growing cover crops and applying natural pest control methods, that don’t harm salmon habitats.

Certified Organic wines are made entirely of organic ingredients and processed without synthetic agents. Organic wine producers claim that it helps produce flavorful wines: Flourishing soil microorganisms and careful attention to the health of the vines, they claim, make a great contribution to taste. Organic wines contain no added sulfites (though some may exist in the wine naturally), which make them better for those with sulfite allergies.

Wines labeled “made with organic grapes” must be made from certified organic grapes but don’t adhere to the same rigorous processing standards.

While enjoying my pinot noir and delicious lobster ravioli from next door restaurant Aquariva, the affable general manager gave me a personal tour. Not surpisingly, the food and amenties were both top notch, but I was surprised by how affordable the price quotes were.  The hotel, spa, and also the restaurant spare no luxury and somehow still sport a reasonable price tag.  When I asked the general manager about this he said, “People don’t want to pay a lot of money.” I think he might be on to something there.

If you mention that you live at Indigo you get an extra 15% off all spa treatments. I would suggest taking advantage of one of the two Valentine’s Day packages offered at the spa and then follow it up with drinks at the elegant and inviting Aquariva Italian Kitchen (also a great spot for brunch).  My favorite cocktail is the John Daly, their version of a long island iced tea.

In any case, I had little reason to spend the day feeling depressed.  So you can imagine my surprise when I flipped on the local news and was informed that Monday had been categorically labeled, “Blue Monday: The Most Depressing Day of the Year.” Apparently, a complex formula has been devised that takes into consideration weather quality, personal debt (especially the credit card bill from Christmas), and the low probability that we are accomplishing our new year’s resolutions.

Although I didn’t feel depressed in any particular way, who was I to argue with the facts?  Studies showed that I should be down in the dumps, and to make matters worse, I was apparently suffering from a case of denial.  Needless to say, I was a bit confused about how I was supposed to feel.  My confusion carried over to Tuesday morning when I arrived at work at the usual time of 6:30 am, a fact that made me think perhaps I was depressed afterall.

But then, as I did my morning check of the rooftop, I noticed something that completely washed all thoughts of depression from my mind, the sunrise.  Here is my cellphone’s best attempt to capture the grandeur.

Those who were there probably understand exactly why it took so long, because an event of that magnitud requires at least a week of recovery time before it can be properly digested.

Portlanders packed the lobby, eager to experience, “The Indigo Life” for themselves.  They would soon learn that Inidigo’s premier living spaces more than live up to the hype. 

The entire evening was simply bursting with excitment.  The lobby entrance took on the glamorous feel of a swanky New York City nightclub and I’m sure every passerby was shocked to hear that it was, in fact, an apartment building that was responsible for drawing such an impressive crowd.

The 14th floor showcased our unrivaled model apartments, while the 23rd floor penthouses, featured local food, drink, and fashion from neighborhood vendors.  From there, the party continued its unique flavor up in the awe-inspiring rooftop lounge.

By the end of the night, the consensus was unmistakable.  Everyone agreed that Indigo residents live in a uniquely hip, luxurious, and yet remarkably sustainable community.

We would like to thank our generous residents for sharing their building with the curious crowd and also our guests who helped us make our grand opening a truly memorable night that Portland will not soon forget.

Penthouse IV: A delicious combination of Masu and Frances May. Sake is a refreshing, light-but-strong drink that goes beautifully with sushi. Ours will be provided by… Masu! An amazing little sushi place tucked right next door to us at Indigo, Masu provides one of the best sushi experiences in Portland. Explosions of flavor, perfectly balanced ingredients and weird seafood that may or may not stare back at you. What more can you ask for?

Fashion: As you sip on sake and slurp up sushi, delight your eyes with the fashion of Frances May. If you happened to catch the recent article on them in Portland Monthly, you’ll know the buzz about this store is well deserved. The store is a true family business, capitalizing on style, great fashion, and amazing design. Sounds just like a certain new apartment building nearby!

Penthouse II is steeped in the true northwest tradition with Edgefield/McMenamin’s and Pendleton.

Drink/Tastes: Even if you’ve only spent a day in Portland, you’ve probably seen about a dozen McMenamin’s establishments. Known for their specatular historical buildings, great brews, and good food, you really can’t go wrong with McMenamins (especially the Rubinator…). Indigo is doubly excited to have these folks around, since we’re right across the street from their newest venture, the Crystal Hotel! Sip Edgefield wine and great brews as you take in the view of the northwest.

Fashion: Another northwest staple will show you the best of Oregon fashion. Pendleton Wool Mills dates back to the 1800s and now has stores nationwide. They mill a soft, lightweight, 100% virgin wool, creating beautiful blankets, sweaters, scarves and shawls. Fashion never felt so soft and comfortable!
