It wasn’t so long ago that wine snobs scoffed at organic wines. These early experiments certainly produced some less than appealing results. However, concerns about the environmental and health effects of synthetic fertilizers and vineyard pesticides have led many growers to go organic and many of these vintages have first-rate quality and taste.

While there are many distinctions between what is truly “organic” and what is simply deceiving marketing, be sure to check your wine label for the following key phrases:

The LIVE, or “Low Input Viticulture and Enology”, label currently certifies vineyards in Oregon and Washington that utilize natural resources like native insects and pest-deterring plants to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides.

“Salmon Safe,” another certification applied to vineyards in the Northwest, ensures that farmers use agricultural practices, such as planting trees, growing cover crops and applying natural pest control methods, that don’t harm salmon habitats.

Certified Organic wines are made entirely of organic ingredients and processed without synthetic agents. Organic wine producers claim that it helps produce flavorful wines: Flourishing soil microorganisms and careful attention to the health of the vines, they claim, make a great contribution to taste. Organic wines contain no added sulfites (though some may exist in the wine naturally), which make them better for those with sulfite allergies.

Wines labeled “made with organic grapes” must be made from certified organic grapes but don’t adhere to the same rigorous processing standards.

Portland's Main Federal Building

SERA Architects plan to cover Portland's main federal building with an eco-facade.

Portland, already famous for its green cityscape, is about to become even greener.  The city plans to makeover the austere concrete of the main federal building by adding a facade of plants that will rise vertically along the exterior.  The proposed project was recently featured in The New York Times showing that Portland and the green architecture trend is catching national publicity.

The “vegetated fins” would cover up to 200 feet of the western side of the building.  An eco-facade of that magnitude would, in my opinion, certainly surpass our own wind turbines as downtown’s most grandiose display of green architecture.  The vegetation would bloom in the summer, creating cooling shade, and die back in the winter to allow sunlight into the building. Hopefully, we will soon see a notable uptick in projects like this one.  I believe that the city could seriously benefit, both environmentally and aesthetically, from a trend like this. I look forward to eating lunch in the park looking up at a building like this. Here’s to a greener city.

We all prepare...

Finally, in a city as green as Portland, we are stepping it up and putting up the first inner city wind turbines! Seriously, to be on top of that building when the first turbine went up was electric (powered by the wind of course)… 8:00 AM PST the group gathered. Everone from Hoffman construction, to ZGF, to Gerding Edlen… all teeming with excitement to see if we could pull this off. With sheer force and will we hoisted the 50 ft. turbine in the air. By 9:00 we had the first of four towers standing atop Indigo. 9:18 AM the lever is pulled and five minutes later with a slight breeze blowing we were producing our own energy. How’s that for innovation?!  Take a look at stills from this morning!

As you drive Burnside… look up!Here's a perspective of the Turbine on the ground
