Workshop tonight, Monday April 26, 6:30pm-9:00pm, Southeast, Central Catholic High School, 2401 SE Stark St. For additional workshops coming up located in the different areas of Portland (Northeast, North, Central City, East, and Southwest), Click Here.

Words from Mayor Sam Adams:

“Dear Friends:

Phase Two of the Portland Plan workshops starts tonight, Monday, April 26th, and I encourage you to attend a neighborhood workshop. All workshops will follow a similar format to the first round, but this time you’ll have a chance to discuss a specific topic in greater depth. Participants will also discuss how we can plan in all areas for the benefit of all Portlanders. You can read more about the topics, also called Action Areas, here.

As Mayor, I am committed to addressing the significant challenges we face as a community – only 61% of our high school students graduate on time, 10.7% of Portlanders are unemployed, nearly 70% of our electricity is produced by burning fossil fuels – and the Portland Plan sets a framework for how this city will overcome these and other challenges over the next 25 years.

Your knowledge of issues and experience in Portland is an invaluable asset when it comes to making decisions about this city’s future. I hope that you will consider contributing to the conversation and helping us refine the collective goals that we are developing to realize a thriving and sustainable city for all Portlanders. Please see the workshop schedule below.

Oh, and just for fun…

We will be welcoming the community with live music, refreshments and door prizes, including donations from local businesses like Grand Central Baking, Pastini Pastaria, New Seasons Market and Meat Cheese Bread. In fact, you can enter to win in our social media contest by RSVPing to the events on Facebook and Twitter.

I look forward to seeing you out in the community”.

Best regards,

Sam Adams

It wasn’t so long ago that wine snobs scoffed at organic wines. These early experiments certainly produced some less than appealing results. However, concerns about the environmental and health effects of synthetic fertilizers and vineyard pesticides have led many growers to go organic and many of these vintages have first-rate quality and taste.

While there are many distinctions between what is truly “organic” and what is simply deceiving marketing, be sure to check your wine label for the following key phrases:

The LIVE, or “Low Input Viticulture and Enology”, label currently certifies vineyards in Oregon and Washington that utilize natural resources like native insects and pest-deterring plants to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides.

“Salmon Safe,” another certification applied to vineyards in the Northwest, ensures that farmers use agricultural practices, such as planting trees, growing cover crops and applying natural pest control methods, that don’t harm salmon habitats.

"You did remember to get the Salmon Safe wine, didn't you?"

Certified Organic wines are made entirely of organic ingredients and processed without synthetic agents. Organic wine producers claim that it helps produce flavorful wines: Flourishing soil microorganisms and careful attention to the health of the vines, they claim, make a great contribution to taste. Organic wines contain no added sulfites (though some may exist in the wine naturally), which make them better for those with sulfite allergies.

Wines labeled “made with organic grapes” must be made from certified organic grapes but don’t adhere to the same rigorous processing standards.

cap and trade

Did you take the time to watch The Story of Stuff video? If not, take some time out of your day and check it out! Next, watch the The Story of Cap & Trade. Why is this important? Our global climate is in trouble not only due to our consumption as individuals but also due to big corporations and industries controlling regulations of carbon emissions through something they call “Cap & Trade”. What exactly is Cap & Trade you might ask? Well, if you are asking that question you should fill in where you are missing out by following this short film to start answering some basic questions.

The following information is from The Story of Stuff website:

“The Story of Cap & Trade is a fast-paced, fact-filled look at the leading climate solution being discussed at Copenhagen and on Capitol Hill. Host Annie Leonard introduces the energy traders and Wall Street financiers at the heart of this scheme and reveals the “devils in the details” in current cap and trade proposals: free permits to big polluters, fake offsets and distraction from what’s really required to tackle the climate crisis. If you’ve heard about cap and trade, but aren’t sure how it works (or who benefits), this is the film is for you”.

Watch The Story of Cap & Trade Now. Updated: You will also be able to view The Story of Cap & Trade featured and debated on Democracy Now.

March 22, 2010, 7:30PM- See Annie Leonard Live at Powell’s Books.

Here’s a bit more about the knowledge Sustainable Table has to share: “Sustainable agriculture involves food production methods that are healthy, do not harm the environment, respect workers, are humane to animals, provide fair wages to farmers, and support farming communities.  But rather than focus on the problems, Sustainable Table promotes the positive shift toward local, small-scale sustainable farming”.
