March 10 – August 7, 2010 “What is the relationship between craft and the Land Art Movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s? While Robert Smithson’s monumental Spiral Jetty(1970) is an example of a heroic and gestural conceptual work in a remote location, David Shaner’s work from the early 1960s through the 1990s reveals a concurrent, domestically-scaled yet quietly sensual relationship between art and the landscape of the American West. Through works drawn from the artist’s estate and the Museum’s collection, along with photographs and personal notes taken by the artist, the exhibition reveals how broader cultural interests in conceptual art and the land, ecology and materiality are explored through an artist known as a “potter’s potter.”- From the Museum of Contemporary Craft.

McMenamins is a well-known classic among Portlanders. With locations all throughout the Portland Metro Area, most anyone can appreciate their artistic pubs with hand-crafted beer. One special feature of McMenamins includes their Theatre Pubs where great flicks, handcrafted brews, and simple eats come together. Mission Theatre is conveniently located in downtown NW Portland. This theatre is one of my favorites; featuring both ground floor and balcony seating for an enjoyable evening. Every Wednesday night is Mission Theatre’s Classic Burger, Beer & Movie for $10.50. In addition, Mission Theatre occasionally hosts NW Film Festival events, live music, and select football games. St John’s Pub located in North Portland is also a well-known spot, hosting theatre-goers with comfy couches and plush theatre seating. I do not want to forget one of the oldest theatre pubs and classics; the Baghdad theatre located in Portland’s SE Hawthorne district.

For show times and locations please call McMenamin’s Theatre line at (503) 249-7474 or visit McMenamin’s Website.

Indigo 12 West’s Grand Opening is Thursday night. Two more days! To prepare you for the excitement to come, here’s another glimpse into the tastes, views, and fashions of the night.

Penthouse II is steeped in the true northwest tradition with Edgefield/McMenamin’s and Pendleton.

Drink/Tamcmenaminsstes: Even if you’ve only spent a day in Portland, you’ve probably seen about a dozen McMenamin’s establishments. Known for their specatular historical buildings, great brews, and good food, you really can’t go wrong with McMenamins (especially the Rubinator…). Indigo is doubly excited to have these folks around, since we’re right across the street from their newest venture, the Crystal Hotel! Sip Edgefield wine and great brews as you take in the view of the northwest.

Fashion: Another northwest staple will show you the best of Oregon fashion. Pendleton Wool Mills dates back to the 1800s and now has stores nationwide. They mill a soft, lightweight, 100% virgin wool, creating beautiful blankets, sweaters, scarves and shawls. Fashion never felt so soft and comfortable!

So Portland has spoken. And so have a few of you from well outside of town. We got some great name submissions, and a lot of good interaction. We had over 14,000 visitors to the site. A total of 830 people suggested over 1,800 names for the building. We gathered piles of feedback from people letting us know which names they liked, and which they did not. Overall, it was a fun process to watch, and to be a part of. From all of us here behind the scenes, we’d like to express a sincere Thank You to all who participated.

Name submission and feedback are now closed. Our crack team of experts is evaluating the top list of choices and determining the final name. We’ll be unveiling the final choices of names for the building, the roof garden, the theater, and the gym at a party for the public this coming First Thursday, August 6th. The festivities will begin at 5 p.m. We’ll gather in the street-level retail space inside the southwest corner of the building for some live music, beer, wine, and eats for all to enjoy. We’ll showcase the opening night of the Hybrid Gallery: A Roving Project Space brought to you by Gerding Edlen Management and the Pacific Northwest College of Art. Take a little peek at the wizard behind the curtain as we hear remarks from Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects, the building’s designers and main residents, as well as from Gerding Edlen Development and the Pacific Northwest College of Art. It’s our little way of saying again, thank you, Portland.  The unveiling of chosen names for the building will begin at 6 p.m. Don’t miss it!
